contrato perpetuo

Obsidian, enamel
Variable dimensions, 2025

Since time immemorial, stone has played a fundamental role in diverse cultures, symbolizing strength, power, stability, and permanence. In many societies, stones have been regarded as sacred objects, used in rituals and ceremonies, and imbued with a meaning that transcends their material nature.

In this context, obsidian occupies a special place in Mexican culture, where it has been used for tools, ornaments, and rituals since pre-Hispanic times. Its deep color and volcanic origin make it a material charged with symbolism, representing both transformation and memory.

The abstract drawings on obsidian are a continuation of my explorations in this medium, where the repetition of simple elements generates a visual language that transcends words. The line or the dot become symbols of universal expression, capable of conveying emotions and messages without the need for conventional writing.

The act of engraving on stone evokes the intention of leaving a mark, a perpetual message similar to sepulchral inscriptions. Unlike paper, obsidian grants these works a sense of permanence, resilience, and durability. In this way, these notations not only dialogue with the history of stone as a symbol, but also explore new forms of visual communication that seek to connect with the deepest layers of our human essence.
